1 MLSB Summer Season Week 6, July 27 2013 on Fri Jul 26, 2013 8:23 am

With the strong teams and serious matchups carrying out during this Summer season, it is amazing that most of the squads have continued to win with the regularity they have.  There are amazing results coming in throughout the league with astounding individual achievements.  This next week of games could really change the scope of the standings as well as the statistical leader stances:

(3 – 3) Stick’Em Up at (0 – 6) Heavy Hammers
Though they didn’t have the beginning to the season they were expecting, the Stick’Em Up have evened out their record with a big sweep.  Their old friends returning have already paid off hefty dividends.  Last weekend, Anthony D’Amico started the double header with 11 shut out innings.  The game ended when he drove in the winning run: Alex Garcia who then answered his teammate with 5 shut out innings where he struck out 9 batters.  In that game, Alex went a triple shy of the cycle as well as drove in 6 runs.  Randy Rhyne and Mike Walsh also hit a homerun a batter, putting to bed their opponents early.  They now test their hands against the Heavy Hammers in Electric Playground Saturday morning.  The Hammers ran into another buzzsaw and nearly won their first game, thanks to the pitching and hitting of their captain Evan Rivels.  He threw 7 innings and was only 1 away from a win while he hit a homerun to give his team that chance at the box.  Todd Alster went deep twice, though it was not enough for the boys from Queens.  They look to turn that around at home this Saturday, though it will be trying considering the quality in the group they face.

(5 – 3) Tornadoes at (6 – 0) Pelham Village Wine (Sun.)
The Tornadoes received some assistance last weekend and now seek to add to their already high win total. They will take the road up to Albert Leonard Middle School in Westchester Sunday morning to meet the Wine.  It was another impressive team effort by the Wine that have kept them undefeated.  In the opener, Randy Belfiore struck out 17 as Steve Chodan went deep twice and Joe Battaglia and AJ Romano hit a homerun apiece for the victory.  Then in the pitcher’s duel second half, Steve Chodan only yielded 2 runs in 6 innings, leaving the door open for Randy Belfiore’s near perfect inning save.  They have both sides of the spectrum fully aglow right now, but with a pesky, hardy team like the Tornadoes coming to town, the Wine will need all areas shimmering this weekend.

(7 – 1) Frozen Ropes at (2 – 6) Pulaskis (Sun.)
Last weekend, the Ropes took the Road southbound and did their work in Queens.  Now, they take the bridge again to meet another tough squad in Oceania Avenue Sunday morning.  Their opener was a little hairy as Tim Yurchak struggled, though still struck out 13 in 5 innings.  Anthony Yurchark then got the win, giving up no runs in 2 innings while striking out 5 in the process.  Rocco Justice was the lone homerun hitter for the team, setting up their second game obliteration.  Steve Yurchak went deep while striking out 5 in his 3 inning, 1 hit shut out.  Anthony Yurchak also hit a big fly as did Rocco Justice, but Tim Yurchak was the big shot as he managed to go long twice.  Their opponents, the Pulaskis, didn’t fare well last weekend as they strive to find their stride.  Greg MacKoul did all he could on the rectangle in the opener, going 10 2/3 innings and fanning 17 batters.  He hopes he and his group can get themselves straightened out as the meat of their schedule begins to come to play.  The Ropes are riding high, meaning the powerful seem to have more to play for.  The Pulaskis are doing their best to get themselves in a better place overall.  How this ends up will be telling for both teams as we wind down to playoff time.
